First ROTC Officer Commissioned at UMC

History was made at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) during recent commencement ceremonies, held May 5, 2001, when Air Force ROTC Cadet Lisa Marie Stanley was commissioned.  Colonel Clark P. Wigley, commander of Air Force ROTC Detachment 610, swore in Second Lieutenant Stanley, the first UMC cadet to be commissioned through Detachment 610 and the first in UMC history.  The detachment serves several colleges in North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota including UMC, North Dakota State University, and the University of North Dakota.

After Stanley was sworn in, Colonel Wigley called Stanley’s husband, Robert, and son, T.J., from the audience to the stage, where they pinned Stanley’s lieutenant bars to her uniform.

Just prior to the ROTC ceremony, Stanley received her bachelor of science degree in applied studies.  She and her family live in Crookston.

“Having the commissioning ceremony during commencement not only made a memorable affair for Lt. Stanley, it was also a wonderful opportunity for increasing awareness of Air Force ROTC on the Crookston campus,” said Colonel Wigley in an official release.

Stanley’s commissioning was the first, but six more cadets are currently enrolled in the program at UMC. The Air Force ROTC program provides leadership and management training for future Air Force officers.  Graduates of the program are commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force.
