UMC Snow Daze Promises More Than a Week of Fun 

Snow Daze, the annual winter fun festival for students at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will run from February 9-17.  This year's theme is "Snow Dazed and Confused."

Students will begin by nominating fellow students for the Snow Daze Royal Court.  Students can nominate candidates on Wed., Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sahlstrom Conference Center Lobby.

The Snow Daze Dance is set for Sat., Feb. 10, in Bede Ballroom from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with music by Ramsdell Productions of Grand Forks.  A grand march introducing candidates for the Snow Daze Royal Court will take place at 10:15 p.m.

Students, faculty, staff, and groups from the Crookston community are encouraged to build snow sculptures on Sunday, Feb. 11.  Snow mounds will be available on the UMC Mall.  Construction will take place from 1-3 p.m. that afternoon.  Prizes will be awarded to the best snow sculptures.  Students welcome the entire Crookston community to the snow sculpture event.  Groups involved in February Fitness or other groups from the city of Crookston can reserve a snow mound by contacting the Student Activities Office at 281-8505.

The final student vote for Snow Daze royalty will be held Monday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Boston “alterna-pop” band Jim’s Big Ego will perform as part of UMC Snow Daze Coronation later that night.  The group will perform in Bede Ballroom immediately following the coronation of UMC Snow Daze royalty, which will take place at 8 p.m.  Admission to the event is free, and the public is invited to attend. 

Wednesday’s events include a special "Chocoholic Dessert Table" from 10:30 a.m. -1:15 p.m. in UMC's Brown Dining room.  Later that night students, faculty, and staff will be encouraged to take part in an “Open Mic” night.  The stage opens at 7 p.m. in the Bede Student Center Lounge.   Interested student, faculty, and staff performers can sign up at the Bede Info Desk.  The public is invited to be a part of the audience.  Refreshments will be served. 

Students can enjoy a movie night on the big screen TV in Bede Lounge on Thurs., Feb. 15.  The movie "Me, Myself and Irene" will begin at 7 p.m., with "The Shawshank Redemption" following at approximately 9 p.m.

Rounding out the week of events, students will play “Survival Bingo” on Fri., Feb. 16, starting at 7 p.m. in Bede Ballroom.  Students will vie for prizes that help them survive college life.

Snow Daze events are sponsored by UMC’s SPACE (Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment) Committee.  Disability accommodations can be made for any of the events by calling 218-281-8506.
