UMC’s Ag-Arama 2001 Set for January 26-27 Ag-Arama, the annual winter competitive and fun event focusing on agriculture and natural resources, will be held Friday and Saturday, January 26 and 27, in the University Teaching and Outreach Complex (UTOC) on the north side of the UMC campus. Ag-Arama features contests in agronomy, animal science showmanship, horticulture, mechanized agriculture, and natural resources. The event allows students to showcase their knowledge and skills in their individual interest areas and gives them a chance interact with each other and with faculty members through the various contests. Ag-Arama is planned and operated by a committee of UMC students who are advised by UMC faculty members. This year’s student organizers include President Paul Detloff of Bertha, MN; Vice-President Angie Pommerening of Oakdale, MN; Secretary Mandy Kidrowski of Willmar, MN; Treasurer Lisa Detloff of Bertha, MN; and historians and website coordinators Barb Heinze of Elrosa, MN; and Justin Petrich of Crookston. This year's faculty advisors are Dawn Sherwood, Assistant Professor of Equine Science, and John Loegering, Assistant Professor of Natural Resources. This year Ag-Arama will commemorate the sesquicentennial or 150th Anniversary of the University of Minnesota. This dedication is to both recognize the many past contributions the University has made to the agriculture and natural resource community and, according to student Angie Pommerening, “to give the world a look at where we are going in the future by showing both the talents and camaraderie that come from attending the University of Minnesota, Crookston.” Some of the events, such as the Mechanized Agriculture Skills Contest, will be held January 17-19, and the contests in horticulture and agronomy will take place on Friday, January 26. The majority of events, however, will be held Saturday, January 27, in UTOC. All of the Ag-Arama events during Saturday are open to the public, as well as to the UMC community and students. UMC alumni are especially encouraged to attend. Animal Science Showmanship contests begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and the Agriculture Industries Show begins at 9 a.m. Other activities on Saturday morning include: broom race obstacle course, cow milking contest, ice cream eating contest, dummy roping, cow pie bingo, fishing contest, men’s and women’s crosscut saw contest, log splitting, and log toss. Lunch is available at noon for $5 per person. The awards ceremony, which includes the naming of Ag-Arama royalty, begins at 1:15 p.m. UMC alumni are invited to attend a social in their honor. That event will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Irishman’s Shanty Restaurant in Crookston. The event will culminate with the annual Ag-Arama Dance at the Crookston National Guard Armory on Saturday, January 27, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There is a $5 cover charge, and a driver’s license I.D. is required for those 21 and older. For more information or to request disability accommodations call 218-281-8100. For a full schedule of events visit the Ag-Arama website: http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/clubs/agarama/ |
