UMC Awards Presented April 18 The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) presented students with achievement and service awards at the annual Student Awards Reception held Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Bede Ballroom on the UMC campus. The ceremony is held each year to honor those who have made outstanding leadership and service contributions or who have achieved high academic standing at the University’s Crookston campus. Among the recognitions and honors, student organization presidents and members of the Crookston Student Association were recognized for their work during the year. Twelve
students received Student Service Awards, which UMC presents to
recognize those students who have excelled not only academically, but also
through leadership and service to the University and local community.
Those students are (back row, l. to r.): Matt
McBlair of Coleville, WA; Tim Adams of Eleva, WI; Sonic Petithomme of
Miami, FL; Paul Detloff of Bertha, MN; Shane Roers of Fargo, ND; (middle
row, l. to r.): Rebekah Stortroen of Climax, MN; Lisa Detloff of Bertha,
MN; Barb Heinze of Elrosa, MN; Deeptha Reddy of Chennai, India; Becky
Seifert of Wahpeton, ND; (front row): Steve Brandt of Kimball, MN; and
Luciana Forati of Santa Fe, Argentina. From that group, two students were recognized with the year’s top academic and student service award: “Man and Woman of the Year.” The UMC Man and Woman of the Year for 2001 are Steve Brandt, a business management and marketing major from Kimball, MN, and Luciana Forati, a sport and recreation management major from Santa Fe, Argentina. Students
also honored selected faculty and staff members with special awards.
These awards are significant in that the entire UMC student body votes to
select the award recipients. Awards were presented in four
categories: The
UMC Advocate Award, a new award presented to recognize extraordinary
written or verbal support of UMC and its students, programs, and events, went to
Crookston Daily Times reporting staff members (below left to right) Laurie
Swenson, Ted Stone, and Mike Christopherson, with UMC student Jim Myers
and UMC director of communications Andrew Svec. Other individuals receiving awards included: Outstanding
