UMC Continuing Education Offers  PC Maintenance and Repair Series 

If you would like to know more about maintaining your computer at home or work, or if you are interested in a career change or in building a strong foundation in the fastest growing industry in the 21st century, PC Maintenance and Repair is for you.  The University of Minnesota, Crookston’s Center for Continuing Education presents a new series of PC Maintenance and Repair courses designed to prepare you to diagnose and repair computer systems, install and configure peripheral devices and master operating systems and setup.  No experience or computer knowledge is required to start or expand your career options in the computer industry.  This series of courses will also prepare you for the A+ Certification exam, an internationally recognized certification and industry standard for PC Technicians possessing the knowledge, skills and customer relations skills needed to excel in today’s job market (www.compTIA.com). 

According to a recent survey by Virginia Tech University, there are currently 346,000 open “core IT” jobs with starting salaries ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 for employees with A+ Certification.  By 2006, there will approximately 1.3 million IT jobs.  This series of courses will give you the hands-on ‘practical’ skills and experience along with the technical knowledge to join this expanding career field.  UMC’s courses are designed to provide you with flexibility and individual attention to help you succeed.

The PC Maintenance and Repair series includes 3 progressive courses, each meeting one evening a week for 6-weeks.  Classes are held on Monday or Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 PM.  Choose to complete the first introductory course or complete the series to prepare for the A+ Certification exam.  Each course qualifies for 1.5 CEU’s from the UMC Center for Continuing Education (Non-Credit UMC course).  The course fees are $149.00 per 6-week session and the course schedule is as follows:

    PC Maintenance and Repair I 
Section 1 meets from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Mondays from Jan. 8  to Feb. 12
Section 2 meets from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Wednesdays from Jan 10 to Feb. 14
     PC Maintenance and Repair II  
Section 1 meets from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Mondays from Feb. 19 to Apr. 2
Section 2 meets from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Wednesdays from Feb. 21 to Apr. 4

     
PC Maintenance and Repair III
Section 1 meets from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Mondays from Apr. 9 to May 14

Class sizes are limited to 10 per session, so register early to reserve your seat.  The course includes laptop and desktop computers and a required textbook, “PC Maintenance and Upgrade,” which may be purchased at the UMC Bookstore.  Students will need an e-mail account and Internet access.
