UMC Dietetics Technician Program Earns High Marks At a recent meeting (October 12, 2000), the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association voted to grant “Accreditation to the Program” to the A.A.S. Dietetics Technician degree program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). The decision was based upon a peer review of the self-study application, a site visit report, and the program’s response. UMC’s program will remain accredited for a 10-year period before renewal, with an update report due in five years. UMC’s program received positive feedback from the site visit team this past spring. According to Sharon Stewart, Associate Professor and Program Manager of UMC's Dietetic Technician program, the site visit team was especially impressed that since 1995, graduates of the program have received a 100% pass rate for the National Registration Exam for Dietetic Technicians. Accreditation with the ADA is a voluntary process that recognizes the quality of an institution or program and assists in its improvement. According to the ADA, "Accreditation of dietetics education rests on the belief that dietetics is a unique profession of such complexity and benefit to the health of the population that it requires a defined educational process based on national standards." Previously, the Dietetics Technician program at UMC had been “approved” by the ADA. ADA approval does not require a site visit. UMC has had continuous Approval from ADA since 1975. For more information about the Dietetics Technician degree program at UMC visit the program’s website www.umcrookston.edu/academics/Dietetics/ or contact Sharon Stewart at 218-281-8202.
