UMC to Host Technology-Themed Elderhostel June 10-16

From June 10-16, over twenty people from across the United States will arrive at the University of Minnesota, Crookston to spend a week learning about the Internet and other computer technologies.  They are taking part in the first of two summer sessions of Elderhostel to be offered at UMC.

The theme for this week-long experience is "Anytime, Anywhere Computing: Day and Night with a Laptop."  During their stay, participants will each be issued a notebook computer.  Throughout the week participants use the computer to learn the basics of e-mail, the Internet, and the Microsoft Office suite of programs, focusing on Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets and databases).   Other sessions focus on computer technology applications such as digital image scanning, digital photography, desktop publishing, and financial management software.

Interspersed throughout the technology sessions are field trips to the Polk County Museum, Wenzel Farms Greenhouses and Gardens, and Dahlgren's Sunflower Processing Plant in Crookston.  The group will also learn about the Japanese art of bonsai from a local expert and will participate in a wine tasting event at Happy Harry’s in Grand Forks.

UMC is well suited for such a technology-based experience because of its distinctive status as a “Laptop University” and one of the ”most wired” college campuses in America.  All UMC classrooms are wired to the local area network, which, in turn, connects to the Internet.  Participants can even access the Internet from their rooms in the campus apartments where they stay for the week.

UMC has been hosting Elderhostel programs since 1978.  Through each week-long session of Elderhostel programs, people 55 and older live on campus, meet new friends from many states, enjoy the beautiful campus landscape and the numerous community tours, and attend the technology-focused seminars and courses taught by UMC and community instructors.

In addition to the June 10-16 session, another similar Elderhostel session is set for July 8-14.  For further information contact UMC’s Center for Adult Learning at 218-281-8681.
