UMC International Series Begins March 5 with Focus on Sweden

Flag of Sweden“Sweden:  The Country of Tomorrowwill kick off the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) 2001 International Seminar Series on Monday, March 5.   Seven UMC students from Sweden will host the program.  Anna Lyrot, Johan Bergholm, Carl-Johan Blomvall, Kristian Borg, Pernilla Ekstrom, Alexander Hansson, and George Pandrea will provide perspectives on their Scandinavian homeland.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with an ethnic dinner for $8.00, followed by a 7:00 p.m. program.  The dinner is served in Brown Dining Room of UMC’s Sahlstrom Conference Center.  The presentation follows the meal and takes place in Bede Ballroom.  The dinner is by reservation only.  For reservations or more information please call Meloni Rasmussen at 218-281-8586 or 218-281-8508.

Each dinner in the International Series includes special ethnic recipes from the featured country, according to Mario Prada, Director of Multicultural and International Programs at UMC, and coordinator of the International Seminar Series.  This year’s series is noteworthy in that all presenters are current international students attending UMC.

Flag of MoroccoOn Monday, March 19, the second dinner in the series will focus on “Morocco: The Moroccan Way” presented by Nawfal Badou.  Nawfal BadouBadou will describe the mystique of his homeland and will share its cuisine, enriched by three cultures and the Moroccan hospitality offered by each.   Badou is also an international student hailing from Rabat, the capital of Morocco.  His major is Golf facilities and Turf Systems Management. 

Flag of ArgentinaThe third dinner in the series is entitled “Argentina:  Land of Beautiful Traditions” and will be presented on Monday, March 26, by Ileana Alvarez, Javier Broglia, Ernesto Lussenhoff, and Luciana Forati.  All are international students attending UMC from Argentina.  These students will present information about Argentina's history, climate, agriculture and industry, costumes, festivals, music (such as “cumbia”), and  traditions such as “mate,” “asados,” and “gaucho.”  Alvarez, Broglia, and Lussenhoff are involved in the MAST (Minnsota Agricultural Student Trainee) Program, and Forati is a Sport and Recreation Management major.

The series culminates in the annual International Dinner, set for Saturday, April 7.  UMC’s international students participate in this dinner, providing menu items from their respective home countries as well as entertainment for the program that follows the dinner.  Tickets for the International Dinner are $10.00 per person.  They are available in advance from the UMC Business Office, in UMC’s Selvig Hall, or from Tours and Travel in Crookston.
