UMC Maroon and Gold Week February 19-24

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will continue celebrating the University of Minnesota’s Sesquicentennial—the anniversary of 150 years of education and service—during “Maroon and Gold Week” February 19-24.  Several special activities will focus on “Maroon and Gold Pride,” and the whole community is encouraged to take part.

During the week, students in all of Crookston’s elementary schools (K-6) will participate in a coloring contest.  Coloring sheets featuring Regal, the UMC Golden Eagle, will be delivered to schools.  The colored pictures will be submitted to UMC and displayed in participating businesses throughout the community during Maroon and Gold week.  Seven winners of the coloring contest will be selected by the UMC Student Athletic Advisory Committee.  Prizes will be family passes to the UMC home basketball games against Minnesota State University, Moorhead on Saturday, February 24.   The winners will be recognized during halftime of the women’s basketball game, which starts at 5:30 p.m.  The men’s basketball game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, February 21, will be Student Maroon and Gold Day at UMC.  Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed students—those promoting the most “Maroon and Gold Pride”—through nominations by other students.  Special UMC prizes will be awarded to the winners.

On Thursday, February 22, UMC will host a community pancake breakfast from 7-9 a.m. in Brown Dining Room.  The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.  Dressing in maroon and gold for breakfast is suggested.  Local service groups such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, the Chamber of Commerce, and others are invited to hold their meetings at UMC that day.  Groups should contact Curt Almlie, Director of University Relations, to set a meeting place.

At 9 a.m. that same day UMC students will hold a rally in Brown Dining Room to generate support for the University of Minnesota’s legislative budget request.  Students will report on their recent trip to the Minnesota State Capitol during the U of M’s Lobby Day, and they will offer testimonials of support for UMC and the U of M.  The public is also invited to attend this event.

Friday, February 23, is Maroon and Gold Day across the entire state.  Everyone is encouraged to wear maroon and gold to show their pride in the University of Minnesota.  UMC faculty and staff are challenged to see who can show the most U of M pride through the way they dress.  Winners will be selected that afternoon at a special gathering at 3 p.m. in Brown Dining Room, rooms A and B.  Everyone is welcome. The top three individuals reflecting the most Maroon and Gold Pride (as judged by UMC students) will be awarded special prizes.

UMC will also host a live downlink of the University of Minnesota President’s Anniversary Tribute on Friday, February 23, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in room 133 of Kiehle Building, near the entrance to the UMC Library.  The event will be broadcast live from Northrop Memorial Auditorium on the East Bank of the Twin Cities campus of the U of M.  The President’s Anniversary Tribute is a special public celebration featuring college and university presidents from across Minnesota, the Big 10, and tribal colleges.  The special guest speaker is Thomas L. Friedman, two-time Pulitzer prize winning New York Times columnist and author of the international best seller The Lexus and the Olive Tree.  This event is open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy the presentation.

The events at UMC coincide with Founders Week on the U of M, Twin Cities campus.  For a full schedule of Founders Week at the Twin Cities Campus, go to www1.umn.edu/sesqui/ .
