UMC Ag Activities Day Set for December 7 Nearly 1,200 students from Minnesota and North Dakota schools are expected to participate in “Ag Activities Day,” an annual event set for Friday, December 7, 2001, and hosted by the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC). Registrations for this year’s Ag Activities Day have already been received from as far away as the Twin Cities. High school students and members of 4-H clubs and FFA chapters from Minnesota and North Dakota are invited to compete in the following contests: consumer products, crops, dairy judging, general livestock, small animals, agricultural mechanics, dairy products, farm management, wildlife, forestry, floriculture, landscaping/nursery, meats, soils, and ag salesmanship. Contests begin at 9 a.m. Morning activities will include contest tours and special agriculture and science workshops. UMC’s Collegiate FFA chapter will also sponsor a Knowledge Bowl contest before the awards recognition ceremony. Contest winners will be announced in Lysaker Gymnasium at 1 p.m. UMC Ag Activity Scholarships of $750, $600 and $450 will be awarded for high individual performance, second, and high individual in each contest. The top three teams will also be recognized. Each team score will be tabulated from the top three individuals from each participating school or chapter. Registration fees are $6.00 per student. We are hosting it conjunction with the Northwest Equine Conference January 18 and 19”, says Melissa Hower-Moritz, associate professor of equine science. “We will have use of the whole arena to give competitors a better view of the horses in addition to have competitors give reason on one of the classes.” Students, instructors and parents are welcome to stay for the Northwest Equine Conference, January 18 &and 19 2002. A trainer demonstration, speakers, and vendors will be available that Friday and Saturday as well.Ag Activities Day contests and their locations are listed below:
