Singer Alex Goldfarb to Perform at UMC March 25

Singer-songwriter Alex Goldfarb will perform at UMC Monday, March 25, at 8 p.m. in the Bede Hall Student Lounge.  The performance is open to the public.  Admission is free for UMC students with UCard ID and $2 for others.

The Minneapolis based singer-songwriter’s performances have been called fierce, yet playful.  Goldfarb’s songs explore the absurdities and esoteric aspects of everyday life.  They deal with diverse topics ranging from earthworms to awaiting death as if it were an MLT vacation.

Goldfarb has performed at numerous night clubs in Minneapolis and has taken the stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  Sometimes performing solo and other times with guest musicians, he maintains a thread of spontaneity throughout every show.  He has even been known to write new lyrics on stage with the help of audience members, adding a new level of creativity to his performances.

Goldfarb recorded his debut CD, “Magnifying Glass,” for the Painted Sun label based in San Francisco.  “Magnifying Glass” consists mostly of Goldfarb's vocals and percussive guitar playing.  Hints of mandolin, Rhodes, and percussion add to the mix and somehow fuse blues, jazz, and folk with world music.

“I go through phases where I listen to a lot of Indian classical music and then a while where I really dig songwriters like Greg Brown and Ricky Lee Jones.  It seems that whatever phase I'm in influences the songs I write at that time," explains Goldfarb.

The performance is sponsored by the Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment (SPACE) Committee.  Disability accommodations are available upon request and can be made by calling 218-281-8506.
