Dan Weber Receives Soil and Water Conservation Society Award UMC student Daniel Weber of Crookston was recently named to receive the 2002 Scholarship Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society at their annual meeting in St. Cloud. In announcing the award Chapter President Lowell Busmann said, “Daniel Weber was selected from a strong pool of candidates from around the state. Candidates are judged on their integrity, skills gained through training or experience, interest in natural resource related fields, grade point average, and their expressed commitment to the field of resource management.” Steve Sellnow, a 1972 graduate of UMC and now District Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Stearns County, was also recognized at the meeting with an Outstanding Career Service Award from the Society. Weber is a junior majoring in Water Resource Management at UMC and is “an excellent role model of a conservation student,” according to Dan Svedarsky, professor of natural resources and program manager of UMC’s Natural Resources Department. Svedarsky added, “Dan Weber is the first UMC student to receive this $500.00 award from the Soil and Water Conservation Society. The award is wonderful recognition for his accomplishments and for our program.” An active member in both the UMC Chapter of The Wildlife Society and the Natural Resources Club, Weber has been a prime mover to affiliate the latter club as a student chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society of America. He was selected in the spring of 2001 to the cooperative career program of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This will lead to a permanent career with that agency after summer internships at different field sites. Weber was also recently named to the Board of the Northwest Regional Agricultural and Natural Resources Sustainable Partnership, an economic development and stewardship initiative for northwest Minnesota. This relates to a project for which he received a UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) grant for land use planning research.
