UMC to Host Western Equine Competition Feb. 23-24

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will serve as the host for a western equitation competition February 23-24.  The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north edge of the campus.  The competition begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 23, and continues at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 24.  The event is free and open to the public.  Concessions will be available.

Equestrian teams from Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, South Dakota State University, Carleton College, Ellsworth Community College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and University of Nebraska, Lincoln are scheduled to compete with UMC’s team.  These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA.

UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region.  UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past five years.

IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program.  UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program.
