UMC to Host Equestrian Competition, IHSA PresidentThe Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will serve as the host for a hunt seat riding competition October 13-14. The two-day event will be held at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north end of the campus. The competition begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, and continues at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 14. The event is free and open to the public. Equestrian teams from Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, South Dakota State University, Carleton College, Ellsworth Community College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and University of Nebraska, Lincoln will compete with UMC’s team in the areas of hunt seat equitation and show jumping. These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA. A special guest will be Bob Cacchione, founder and executive president of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). Cacchione will arrive in Crookston on Thursday, October 11. On Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the UTOC classroom he will meet UMC students involved in the equine industries management degree program, and he will share the story of the IHSA. UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region. UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past five years. This is the first year, however, that the UMC equestrian team is considered a varsity team. IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program. UMC is one of the few schools in the nation to provide such a specialized equine science program. For more information contact Dr. Melissa Hower-Moritz, Assistant Professor of Equine Science, at 218-281-8125, or refer to the UMC IHSA Team web page at webhome.crk.umn.edu/clubs/IHSAteam/ .
