UMC to Host Regional Equestrian Competition April 6The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will serve as the host college for the regional championship competition of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The event will be held Saturday, April 6, at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, on the north edge of the campus. The show begins at 9:00 a.m. with the Hunt Seat riding competition and continues at 1:00 p.m. with the Western riding competition. The event is free and open to the public. The high point individuals from Saturday’s competition will move on to the zone level competition, held April 13 at University of Wisconsin--River Falls. High point teams and individuals from that level will advance to the national IHSA competition, scheduled for May 3-5 at Cazenovia College in New York. Equestrian teams from Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin--River Falls, University of Wisconsin--Madison, Carleton College, Ellsworth Community College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and University of Nebraska, Lincoln are scheduled to compete with UMC’s team. These teams comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA. UMC has been a member of the IHSA Zone 6, Region 4, since 1996, and it is known as the “President College” or hub of that region. UMC’s riding teams have been strong competitors at the zone level and have sent several members on to national competition over the past five years. IHSA competition provides supplemental riding opportunities for students enrolled in UMC’s Equine Industries Management degree program. For more information contact Dr. Melissa Hower-Moritz, Assistant Professor of Equine Science, at 218-281-8125, or refer to the UMC IHSA Team web page at http://webhome.crk.umn.edu/clubs/IHSAteam/.
