UMC Riders Qualify for IHSA Zones in River Falls

Four University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) students will advance to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Zone Championships on April 13 at University of Wisconsin, River Falls.  To qualify for the Zone Competition, riders had to place first or second in classes at the IHSA Regional Show held Saturday, April 6, at the UMC University Teaching and Outreach Center Arena.

Julie Schlossberg of Crookston was a double qualifier and the only Hunt Seat Team rider to advance. Schlossberg won the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences Class and placed second in the Intermediate Equitation on the Flat Class.

“I’ll graduate this spring, so this show was really my last shot at IHSA.  I’m thrilled, especially when you consider I’m the oldest student on the UMC teams,” she said.  Schlossberg, who said she is “49 something,” is an equine industries management major at UMC.

Three members of the UMC Western Team qualified for Zones.  Sharon Altepeter, a senior from Crookston, placed second in the Open Reining Equitation Class.  Keri Nelson of Henry, S.D., won the Intermediate Equitation Class.  And Andrew Hinrichs of Rose City, Minnesota, placed second in the Intermediate Equitation Class.

Thirteen UMC students competed in Saturday’s show. To qualify for the Regionals, riders had to accumulate at least 35 points per class at approved IHSA shows.

IHSA teams compete in shows at various colleges during the school year.  On Saturday, equestrian teams from UMC, Iowa State University, Saint Cloud State University, University of Wisconsin at River Falls, University of Wisconsin at Madison, Carleton College, Ellsworth Community College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and University of Nebraska, Lincoln competed at the regional show.  These schools comprise Zone 6, Region 4 of the IHSA.

Top placed riders at the Zone Championships will advance to the IHSA National Championship on May 3-5 at Cazenovia College in New York.
