UMC to Host NW Minnesota Equine Conference January 18-19 Note: Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled. The Center for Adult Learning and the Equine Industries Management Department at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will host the Northwest Minnesota Equine Conference Friday, January 18, and Saturday, January 19, 2002. The event will begin with registration at 5:30 p.m. in UMC’s University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, located on the north edge of the campus. The event consists of a series of programs for horse owners, equine business people, veterinarians, 4-H members and affiliates, and others interested in horses and the equine industry. Exhibitors are also invited to take part in the conference as an opportunity to connect with horse enthusiasts from across Minnesota and North Dakota. Registration fees are $50 per adult; $30 per student (ages 12 and over); and $25 for students under 12. Group rates are available. Preregistration by Friday, January 11, is highly recommended. The program begins Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. with a welcome and the Youth Horse Judging Contest Awards Ceremony. Awards will be presented to the top high school individuals and teams who participate in the judging contests held earlier in the day. Over 200 participants from high schools across the region are expected to participate in that contest. (Refer to www.umcrookston.edu/ag/aad for more information.) From 6:15 to 9 p.m. that evening Jonathon Holland, of Grand Forks Performance Horses, will discuss Coaching and Judging Riders for Western Horsemanship with assistance from members of the UMC Equestrian Western Riding Team. Registration begins again at 8 a.m. on Saturday, January 19 in the Youngquist Auditorium of the Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) on campus. Melissa Hower-Moritz, coordinator for the Equine Industries Management degree program at UMC, will welcome attendees at 9 a.m. At 9:15 a.m. Stephanie Valberg, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Associate Professor of Large Animal Medicine at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will present Effective Training and Conditioning of Performance and Trail Horses. At 10:45 a.m. Dr. Valberg will also present updates on important equine infectious diseases. Lunch will begin at noon in the UTOC Arena, and attendees will get a sneak peak of UMC’s 2002 Equine Extravaganza (set for February 16-17) from current UMC equine students. In the afternoon concurrent sessions will be held in UTOC Arena and classrooms. At 1:30 p.m. topics include Strategies for Managing Your Horse Hobby Farm and Small Business and Training Methods for Barrel Racing Riders and Horses. At 2:45 p.m. topics include What’s New in Western Wear for the Show Ring and Coaching Riders for Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat and Over Fences.
