Ash and Reuben Fast Horse to Perform at UMC Nov. 15 Traditional Lakota educators Ash and Reuben Fast Horse will host an evening of Native American experiences at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) on Thursday, November 15, beginning at 7 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. The event will feature traditional songs and dances, drumming, flute playing, and storytelling. The performance is free and open to the public. Reuben Fast Horse is certified by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the North Dakota State Board of Education as an “Eminent Scholar.” Born in 1971 on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, he has researched traditions to preserve such dances as the "Buffalo Dance" and "Eagle Dance." Reuben has performed at the prestigious WOMAD World Music Festival three times, and he is a 2001 Grammy nominee for “Best Native American Music Album” with the group Lakota Thunder. Ash Fast Horse, an accomplished dancer of ethnic and choreographed styles, displays both women's traditional and contemporary Native American dances and has performed at the International Dance Festival of South Australia. Ash also is a traditional and contemporary Lakota singer and craftswoman. As educators and cultural ambassadors, the two speak eloquently about the contributions of Native America to contemporary life. According to Reuben, "We love sharing this information and perspective with everyone because we all benefit from the knowledge and practices of the First Nations. If you peel back the layers of American history, you will find roots in Native America. Much of our foods, tools, medicines and governmental structures are derived from Ancient America. You will not find this knowledge in typical American history books, and as Americans we all should know our history." Disability accommodations are available upon request by contacting 218-281-8506.Reuben and Ash Fast Horse are managed by Native Voices Booking and Management.
