UMC to Host Horse Judging Contest January 18

The Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) and its Equine Industries Management degree program will sponsor their annual Horse Judging Contest on Friday, January 18, 2002.  The contest will begin at 9 a.m. in UMC’s University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) Arena, located on the north edge of the campus.  The Equine Contest Awards Ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. that evening in the UTOC Arena.  Over 120 participants are expected.

Interested high school students and members of 4-H clubs and FFA chapters from Minnesota and North Dakota are invited to compete.  

Students will judge horses at halter (conformation) and during performance.  The contest will include two halter classes from among Arabians, Morgans, Hunter Conformation and/or Stock-Type Horses (Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas); and two performance classes from among Hunter Under Saddle or Hunter Pleasure, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Hack, English Pleasure, Saddle Seat Equitation, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Pleasure Driving.  One reasons class will be given.  Ties will be broken on reasons scores.  Top placing individuals will be eligible for UMC scholarships.

Early registration is suggested.  Cost per participant is $5.  Those registering after January 14, 2002, will pay a late registration fee of $6 per registrant.  Participants may register online at www.umcrookston.edu/ag/aad, or they should contact UMC’s Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources at 218-281-8101.

Formerly a part of UMC’s Ag Activities Day held in December, the event this year will be held in conjunction with the Northwest Minnesota Equine Conference, also scheduled to be held at UMC January 18-19, 2002.  These two events are separate; please note that each event has its own registration.
