Annual UMC International Dinner Series Begins March 4 with Focus on China

“China:  Civilization and Modernization” will kick off the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) 2002 International Seminar Series on Monday, March 4.  Baizhou Chen, a current UMC student from Xiamen, China, will provide perspectives on his homeland.  Chen is majoring in hotel, restaurant and institutional management at UMC.  In addition Rebecca Locke, a horticulture student from Bemidji, Minn., will discuss the Chinese Tea Preparation Ceremony.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with an ethnic dinner followed at 7:00 p.m. by a program focusing on the culture and traditions of the respective country.  The dinner is served in Brown Dining Room of UMC’s Sahlstrom Conference Center with the presentation in Bede Ballroom following the meal.  The dinner is by reservation only and costs $8.00 per person.  For reservations or more information please call Brent or Angelika at 218-281-8538 or 218-281-8540.

Each dinner in the International Series includes special ethnic recipes from the featured country, according to Mario Prada, Director of Multicultural and International Programs at UMC, and coordinator of the International Seminar Series.  

On Monday, March 18, the second dinner in the series will focus on “Bangladesh: ‘Bangla’ is our Greatest Pride.  Among the presenters for the program will be Faiza Ahad, a UMC student double majoring in business management—marketing and information technology.  Ahad is from Dhaka, Bangladesh.  UMC faculty member Aziz Rahman and his daughter Nandita Rahman will also take part in the program.

The third dinner in the series will be held Monday, March 25, and will pose the question “Why Is Norway Rated the Number One Country to Live In?”  Petter Lovaas, an information technology management major from Sandefjord, Norway, will provide the answers as well as perspectives on his Scandinavian heritage.

The series culminates with the annual International Dinner, set for Saturday, April 13.  UMC’s international students participate in this dinner, providing menu items from their respective home countries as well as entertainment for the program that follows.  Tickets for this dinner are $10.00 per person and will be available through advance sales only.  Tickets may be purchased at the UMC Business Office, in UMC’s Selvig Hall, or from Tours and Travel in Crookston.
