Kimono World Tour to Make Stop at UMC April 10Emiko Kajino of Kimono World in Tokyo, Japan, will bring her show "Welcome to Kimono World" to the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) for a 7 p.m. interactive performance on Wednesday, April 10, in Bede Ballroom. The UMC session is part of a tour of the Red River Valley throughout the early part of April. The event is free and open to the public. The event will feature demonstrations of kimono dressing for women, men, and children, traditional Japanese music and dance, the history of the kimono, and the Japanese tea ceremony. In addition to demonstrating some of the most captivating aspects of Japanese culture, the event will provide opportunities for audience participation. The word kimono means “something to wear,” and kimono is the national costume of Japan. Few contemporary Japanese wear kimono all the time. However, many still observe this traditional form of dress on special occasions such as tea ceremonies, formal parties, and wedding ceremonies. Assisting Emiko Kajino will be Naomi Senzaki, an origami artist who is also talented in the art of chigirie, which is a popular Japanese art form of using colored paper; Nobuko Tsukui, a hair beautician who specializes in the elaborate Japanese traditional hair styles for kimono; and Eli Fushihara, who plays Tsugaru-Shamisen strings. Welcome to Kimono World is sponsored by UMC’s Concerts and Lectures Committee. Disability accommodations are available by calling 218-281-8506.
