UMC’s Svedarsky Recognized by The Wildlife Society in RenoDan Svedarsky, professor of natural resources at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) was recently recognized on the completion of his three-year term of service on the National Council of The Wildlife Society at their annual meeting in Reno, Nevada. Svedarsky has served as the section representative for the eight states comprising the Society’s North Central Region. He has served in representing wildlife issues of the region at the national level, assisting with conservation policy formulation, and the conducting of business of the professional organization.
The Wildlife Society publishes professional journals, technical position statements, and special books; recognizes accomplishments of organizations and individuals; maintains a policy presence on wildlife conservation issues in Congress; and sponsors a national meeting, which hosted 1,400 at the recent Reno meeting. One of Svedarsky’s activities with The Wildlife Society has been serving as chair of the “Celebrating Our Wildlife Conservation Heritage Project,” a national network to document the historical roots of the wildlife profession. This has principally involved videotaping interviews with wildlife professionals who have played key roles in the development of the science and craft of wildlife management. Svedarsky has conducted several interviews to date, and others have brought the total to nearly forty completed interviews. They will be used in wildlife documentary films, as library educational resources, and as part of interpretive displays at historical museums across the U.S. Svedarsky has also developed an instructional video on conducting oral history interviews in conjunction with Tom Sondreal of UMC’s Media Resources Department. Historical wildlife research memorabilia and documents are also being collected as part of the project. Although he has completed his term as a member of The Wildlife Society Council, Svedarsky’s involvement with the organization remains high, as he is chairing the Program Committee for the next national meeting scheduled for Bismarck, North Dakota, in September of 2002. Department colleague and wildlife professor, John Loegering, is assisting with the annual meeting planning as chair of the Contributed Papers Subcommittee. While these tasks will be a bit daunting at times, Svedarsky notes that, “This involvement provides a significant opportunity for national visibility of our natural resources program and for our students as well. We will be involving the UMC Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society in student events at the Bismarck meeting.” Svedarsky coordinates the Natural Resources Program at UMC and is a wildlife research biologist with the Northwest Research and Outreach Center.
