Four Finalists Named to UMC Chancellor Search List Four finalists have been selected in the search for a new chancellor at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Each of the finalists will visit the campus and interview, meeting with various campus and community groups, during next two weeks.The finalists include Ben E. Johnson, President of Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska; John M. Anderson, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Alfred State College, Alfred, New York; Ellen-Earle Chaffee, President of Valley City State University, Valley City, North Dakota; and Velmer S. Burton, Jr., Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Sociology at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota. The chair of the UMC Chancellor Search Committee, Robert J. Jones, who serves as Vice President and Executive Vice Provost at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities Campus, made the announcement to the campus on the afternoon of Friday, April 25.Each finalist will interview with University of Minnesota officials on the Twin Cities campus and will then visit the Crookston campus. During the campus visit, each candidate will meet with various campus and community groups and will attend a public forum including a public presentation and a question and answer session.On Wednesday, April 30, Ben Johnson’s public forum will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in Youngquist Auditorium in the Agricultural Research Center on the UMC Campus. John Anderson’s public forum will be Friday, May 2, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Youngquist Auditorium. Ellen Chaffee’s public forum is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Youngquist Auditorium. The final candidate, Velmer Burton, will present to the public on Wednesday, May 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Youngquist Auditorium. “We were very fortunate to attract a strong pool of candidates,” said Jones, “thanks in large part to the efforts of Chuck Bunting and his colleagues from A. T. Kearney.” The Chancellor Search Committee met on March 28 to discuss 55 complete applications. Of those, the committee selected 11 candidates for confidential interviews held April 12 and 13 in the Twin Cities. The four finalists were selected from that group. Current UMC Chancellor, Don Sargeant, will step down from that position on June 30. Sargeant plans to take a one-year leave and then return to the UMC campus, where he may serve in a consultative or development role.
