Illusion Theater’s “A Small Body of Determined Spirits” at UMC May 1

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will host the Illusion Theater production of A Small Body of Determined Spirits on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium on the UMC Campus.  The performance is free and open to the public.  Originally scheduled to perform the play at UMC on April 16, the theater troupe was forced to reschedule for May 1 due weather conditions.

“A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”

Taking its title from Gandhi’s famous words, Determined Spirits tells the stories of five individuals--men and women--who have different experiences, perspectives, and interactions with the peace movement.  Through the use of storytelling, songs, fables, and humorous scenes, the play gives information on waging peace, provides insight into why some people are involved in "waging peace," and ultimately inspires the audience to see how they can become part of a body of determined spirits.

Determined Spirits is written by Beth Gilleland, Brian Goranson, and Michael Robins with additional material by Vince Delaney and Bonnie Morris and Original Music by Tim and Paul Frantzich.  The Illusion Theater was commissioned by Pax Christi Minnesota to create Determined Spirits.  The play is directed by Brian Goranson with music direction by Denise Prosak.  Maggie Chestovich, Lavina Erickson, Amy McDonald, Walter Weaver, and Steven Young make up the five member ensemble cast.

Following the production, Illusion Theater and Pax Christi members will lead a discussion.

Based in Minneapolis, Illusion Theater’s mission is to create theater that illuminates the myths and realities of our times and to catalyze personal and social change.   Visit <www.illusiontheater.org>.

The performance is made possible, in part, though a grant from the Sexton Family Foundation.  The event is cosponsored by the UMC Student Center, UMC Cooperative Campus Ministry, and Pax Christi Minnesota.
