Endowment Fund Established to Honor Chancellor Donald and Mary Beth Sargeant
On October 30, 2002, UMC celebrated its annual Torch and Shield Recognition with a very special announcement. The Torch and Shield Recognition is a time when UMC thanks and honors those who have contributed to the success of this campus. This year’s event was highlighted by the announcement of the establishment of the Chancellor Donald and Mary Beth Sargeant Endowed Scholarship.
Ken Broin, lead trustee of the Dr. Frank W. Veden Charitable Trust, was on hand to announce that an endowment will be established in honor of the Sargeants, and that the Veden Trust would match the funds that are raised for the endowment up to $50,000. Broin lived up to his word that very evening. When the first two dollars were placed in a “piggy” bank for the Sargeant fund, he matched those with two more. Broin kicked off the fund drive, which will take place over the next three years.
Chancellor Sargeant summed up his feelings about the endowment saying, "There couldn’t be a better way to honor us. We came to UMC as a young couple and UMC has been a big part of our life for many years. We are very appreciative of this gift. It provides an opportunity for students to attend UMC and to enrich their life, as ours has been through our UMC experience."
It is a privilege for UMC to honor Don and Mary Beth; they have given much to UMC and to the Crookston community. Meyer and Jay Hogfoss of Delta Theta Sigma's UMC Chapter. This was the
first donation to the Sargeant Endowment made by current students.
