UMC’s Senske to
Take Leave, Oseth Appointed Interim Men’s Basketball Coach University
of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Head Men’s Basketball Coach Gary Senske
has requested a leave of absence. UMC
officials have granted the request, and Jeff Oseth, who has served as
Senske’s assistant coach since 1995, has been appointed interim head
coach. “We
certainly want to support Coach Senske in his request for a leave.
He has been vital to the success of our men’s basketball program,
especially in our transition from junior college competition to NCAA
Division II,” said UMC Chancellor Don Sargeant.
Senske’s
request leaves a considerable void in the college’s basketball program.
Lon Boike, Director of Athletics at UMC, stated, “We support
Gary’s decision, and we also want to maintain a level of consistency for
our student athletes involved in the men’s basketball program.
We think Jeff Oseth is the best choice to step in and serve as
interim coach without losing any momentum.”
In order to help support Oseth in his new role, the campus will
also appoint an assistant men’s basketball coach as soon as possible. Senske
has served as UMC’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach since 1981.
He began his 21st season at UMC in the fall of 2001 with
394 career wins. On February
15, 2002, he achieved his 400th career win.
Another season highlight was an impressive first-ever win against
the North Dakota State University Bison.
Prior to his tenure at UMC,
Senske served as head basketball coach at Underwood High School from
1967-1972. From 1972-81 he coached at Eveleth High School. A native of McIntosh, Minn., Oseth had an
outstanding prep career at Win-E-Mac High School.
He was a three-time all-conference selection, was nominated to the
Minnesota All-Star Team, and was the Region’s Most Valuable Player.
He was also the class valedictorian. Oseth
played basketball as a student at UMC from 1990-92. He was a two-time all-division player and was co-captain of a
team that was ranked third offensively at the NJCAA Division I level.
Oseth
then transferred to Minnesota State University, Moorhead (MSUM), where he
was a two-year letter winner and was voted by his teammates as the most
dedicated player for two years.
