Commencement Set for May 10

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will hold commencement ceremonies for the graduating class of 2003 on Saturday, May 10.  Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. in the Lysaker Gymnasium on the campus.   The public is welcome to attend the ceremony and the reception to follow in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center.

One-hundred-thirty (130) students are expected to participate in the ceremonies.  Bachelor of science, associate in applied science, and associate in science degrees will be conferred upon graduates, subject to completion of all curriculum requirements.   Click here for a list of students participating in commencement exercises (participants listed in bold). At 2 p.m. the processional will begin, led by senior faculty member and mace-bearer Robert Smith, director of UMC’s Center for Business and Technology.  The procession will include faculty marshal David Hoff, assistant professor of agricultural economics, followed by the UMC faculty, degree candidates, and platform guests.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 610, with students from UMC, will serve as the color guard. 

MetzenUniversity of Minnesota Regent David Metzen will offer greetings from the Board of RegentsIn addition to serving on the U of M Board of Regents since 1997, Metzen is the executive director of the Dodge Nature Center, West St. Paul.  Previously, he worked in South St. Paul Public Schools for 36 years, including serving as the superintendent for 18 years.  He also does consulting work on leadership and is a director of the Dakota Bank.

SargeantUMC Chancellor Donald Sargeant and Regent Metzen will confer the degrees, while UMC Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Douglas Knowlton presents the candidates.  Chancellor Sargeant will provide the commencement address to the graduates.  The year will mark the last time he presides over commencement ceremonies as chancellor.  This coming June 30 Sargeant will step down from UMC’s leadership position after 18 years in that role.

Korkowski RollnessUMC Student Association President Jean Korkowski, an information technology management major from Brandon, Minnesota, will speak for the class of 2003.  As outgoing student body president, Korkowski will pass the academic torch to president-elect Kyle Rollness, an agricultural business major from Langdon, North Dakota.

ericksonMark Erickson, member of the UMC Class of 1998 and president of the UMC Alumni Association, will offer congratulations to the class of 2003 and will welcome them into the Alumni Association. 

Special music will be presented by the UMC Choir under the direction of George French, assistant professor of music and theater.

At 4 p.m. that afternoon a special commissioning and bar pinning ceremony will be held in Youngquist Auditorium of the Agricultural Research Center on campus.  The ceremony will recognize three graduates taking part in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC).  Officials from Detachment 610 will present commissions to David Fulkerson, Mark Hendricks, and Aaron Muller, who will have earned the rank of second lieutenants in the United States Air Force.
