UMC Names Outstanding Alumni for 2002

The University of Minnesota, Crookston Alumni Association is pleased to announce its Outstanding Alumni Awards for the year 2002.  These awards recognize alumni who have displayed exemplary commitment and service to their occupational field, community, education, place of worship, and family.

This year, the UMC Alumni Association has selected two alumni who have met the criteria in an outstanding fashion.  They will be recognized as Outstanding Alumni during halftime at the UMC Homecoming Football Game on Saturday, September 21, 2002, at Ed Widseth Field.   They and their families will be special guests during all UMC Homecoming events.

This year’s honorees are Jim Roers ‘72 of Fargo, ND, and Monica (Holm) Christensen ’80 of Bemidji.

Jim Roers

Jim RoersJim Roers came to the University of Minnesota, Crookston from the Parkers Prairie, Minnesota area.  He graduated from Brandon High School and then attended UMC for two years, graduating in 1972.  Following his UMC graduation, Roers continued his education at North Dakota State University, completing a bachelor’s degree in animal science in 1974.  

Roers has been actively involved in the construction industry since 1970.  He is President and CEO of Roers’ Construction, Inc., Roers’ Development, Inc., Roers’ Investments, LLC, and Professional Property Management, LLC.  Roers Corporate Offices are located in Fargo, North Dakota.  

Roers most recently teamed with the Keller Williams franchise to bring to Fargo one of the nation’s most successful real estate businesses.  He and his wife, Sandy, are partners in the realty company.  The family-run business oversees the administration of each project, monitors the ongoing status of the company, identifies new business opportunities, and assigns appropriate personnel to develop projects.  

Roers’ Construction, Inc. has been involved in some major projects in the Fargo area including Times Square East, Culvers, Fargo Civic Center, MSUM Apartment Complex, MSUM Hagen Hall, Lowes Home Improvement Center, Gordmans, and the Meritcare Loading Dock.  Also, the company recently completed the construction of a third Applebees Restaurant located in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.  

Jim and Sandy Roers reside in Fargo and have four grown children:  Shannon, Shane, Stacy and Stephanie.  Shane is a 2001 graduate of UMC and is married to Lisa (Detloff), also a UMC alum.  Shane is currently employed at Roers Construction as a project manager.  

Monica (Holm) Christensen

Monica Holm ChristensenMonica (Holm) Christensen is a 1980 graduate of UMC.  She received a degree in court and conference reporting.  In the fall of 1980 she began employment in the court reporting industry and has been a court reporter continuously for the past 22 years.  

Christensen began her career as a freelance court reporter and continued in the freelance area until 1996, when she began her current employment as an official court reporter for the State of Minnesota in the Ninth Judicial District.  For the past six years, she has been the court reporter to the Honorable Paul T. Benshoof in Bemidji, and has provided realtime translation for Judge Benshoof during all court proceedings.

Christensen is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Association of Verbatim Reporters and Captioners (MAVRC), an organization of approximately 250 reporters throughout Minnesota, and is the organization’s Immediate Past President.  She has also held the offices of President-Elect and President, and has served as the chairperson of MAVRC’s Certification and Testing Committee, Technology Committee, and Nominating Committee.  During her tenure as president, she pursued the development of the organization’s first web site and was actively involved with the organizing committee of official reporters who fought to organize as a union and successfully negotiated their first union contract with the State of Minnesota last year. 

Christensen is also a Member of the National Court Reporters Association and has received certification as a Registered Professional Reporter as well as a Registered Merit Reporter.  She currently serves as a mentor to new court reporters and court reporting students nationwide, through the National Court Reporters Association’s Virtual Mentoring program and has done so for several years.

Christensen and her husband, Charlie, have been married for 19 years.  They reside in Bemidji, Minnesota, and have one son, Charlie, Junior, who is 13.
