UMC Faculty and Staff Receive Awards for 2003-2004 Academic Year The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) and the Northwest Research and Outreach Center (NWROC) recognized several faculty and staff at the annual end-of-the-year recognition celebration, held Monday, May 10, on the UMC campus. Among the various awards and recognitions were acknowledgements of the contributions of retiring faculty and staff members. Five individuals have have been employed by the University for a combined total of 170 years of service. Marlys Johnson was recognized for 32 years of service to Facilities Management and Residential Life; Jimmy Kaiser for 41 years of service to Facilities Management; Jerry Knutson for 35 years as a faculty member teaching biology; Don Sanders for 34 years of service to Facilities Management; and Jan Solheim for 28 years of service to the Northwest Research and Outreach Center.
The following awards were presented in recognition of outstanding achievement and distinguished performance.

Service Learning Award – Jerry Knutson, associate professor of biology Builders of Diversity Award – Jerry Knutson, associate professor of biology The Outstanding Community Service Award was first presented in 1999 to recognize the contributions UMC faculty and staff make within the larger community of Crookston and the region. Individuals who receive this award are recognized as "bridge builders" who understand that UMC is not an island, but an integral part of northwest Minnesota. They freely and openly share their talents and gifts, adding value to the entire region and reinforcing UMC's outreach mission. This year the Outstanding Community Service Award was presented to Dennis Magsam, Media Services.
UMC's Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1983 to recognize those members of the faculty who have made significant contributions to teaching. The award symbolizes UMC’s commitment to excellence in teaching, and the recipient is selected by a group of faculty peers. The 2004 Distinguished Teaching Award was presented to Soo-Yin Lim-Thompson, associate professor of early childhood education.The purpose of the Civil Service/Bargaining Unit Distinguished Service Award is to promote and recognize excellence in job performance among UMC employees of that classification. The 2004 Civil Service/Bargaining Unit Distinguished Service Award was presented to Sue Dwyer, Publications and Design. Similarly, the Academic Professional and Administrative Distinguished Service Award recognizes excellence in job performance among UMC employees of the P&A classification.
