Roger Moe Receives Honorary Doctorate at UMC Commencement May 8
Roger Moe, former Minnesota state senator, received the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Minnesota during commencement ceremonies for the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Class of 2004, held Saturday, May 8, at 2 p.m. in UMC’s Lysaker Gymnasium. University of Minnesota Regent Clyde Allen, Jr. of Moorhead conferred the degree, and UMC Chancellor Velmer S. Burton, Jr., read the honorary proclamation: “Native of Crookston, Minnesota; graduate of Mayville State University, B.S. degree, 1966, with graduate studies at Moorhead State University and North Dakota State University; mathematics teacher and coach for Ada High School, 1966-72; Minnesota senator, elected by Legislative District 2, 1970-2002; senate majority leader, 1981-2002; president of National Strategies, Inc.; partner of Tower Solutions, Inc.; recipient of many public service awards, including the William M. Bulger excellence in State Legislative Leadership Award— “Because, for more than 30 years, you have been a caring, compassionate, and highly productive legislator, serving the state of Minnesota as an outstanding senate majority leader for 21 years; because your inclusive leadership style earned you the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle; because your talent for building consensus achieved landmark legislation in the interests of the public good; because you advocated for environmental stewardship and authored the Environmental Trust Fund, a national model for conservation; because you worked to strengthen K-12 education and improve higher education by uniting state universities and community and technical colleges into one system; because you authored legislation to diversify rural economies and combat urban decay; because you have served the people of Minnesota with uncommon energy and unwavering dedication— “The Regents of the University of Minnesota, upon recommendation of the faculties, confer upon you, Roger D. Moe, the degree of doctor of laws, honoris causa.” The awarding of the degree marked the first time an honorary doctorate had been presented on the Crookston Campus. Moe went on to give the commencement address to the graduating class. Moe and his wife, Paulette, make their home in rural Erskine, northwestern Minnesota. They have four children and four grandsons.
