Singer Pat Surface to Perform at UMC October 1 Singer-songwriter Pat Surface will perform at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Wednesday, October 1, at 8 p.m. in the Eagles Nest Lounge, Sahlstrom Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public. Surface is a musician, singer, songwriter, and storyteller who grew up around the lakes and forests of Minnesota. “My music is hard to classify,” says Surface, “but if I had to try, it would be a blending of God, nature, and love. All of life stems from these three things, and that is what I love to write and sing about.” In 2003 Surface released two albums. “Our Singing Wilderness” is an instrumental CD that blends soothing nature sounds with reflective acoustic music. “The Wilderness Within” is a contemporary Christian folk album that combines American roots music and Celtic melodies with Christian lyrics and inspiring messages. Surface is currently working on an album called “The Long Goodbye.” Scheduled for release in 2004, “Goodbye” contains music touching on the themes of Alzheimer’s disease (his wife’s father is a victim of the illness) and the decimation of the planet. Surface was an all-star basketball player and a "living history" teacher, but his passion for the environment drew him to the performing arts 25 years ago. He and his wife, Donna, and son, Trevor, built their home at the edge of a lake amid the trees of the Boundary Waters of northeastern Minnesota. Surface named their home Spiritwood, which is also the name of his music company. Learn more on the Web at www.patsurface.com. The performance is sponsored by the UMC Student Center. Disability accommodations are available upon request. For more information, call 218-281-8506.
