Roger Moe to Receive Honorary Doctorate at UMC Commencement May 8, 2004

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will hold commencement ceremonies for the graduating class of 2004 on Saturday, May 8.  Ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. in the Lysaker Gymnasium on the campus.  The public is welcome to attend the ceremony and the reception to follow in Brown Dining Room of Sahlstrom Conference Center.

Approximately 145 students are expected to participate in the ceremonies.  Bachelor of science, associate in applied science, and associate in science degrees will be conferred upon graduates, subject to completion of all curriculum requirements. 

Roger MoeAmong the many highlights of the event will be the awarding of the honorary doctor of laws degree to Roger Moe (left), former Minnesota state senator.  A native of Crookston, Moe served as Minnesota senator, elected by Legislative District 2 from 1970 to 2002 and as senate majority leader from 1981 to 2002.  He is the president of his own consulting company, National Strategies, Inc. and a partner of Tower Solutions, Inc.  He also serves on the board of directors of the Norwegian American Foundation, Policy Consensus Initiative, Minnesota Kids First, and is on the advisory board to the University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute.  Roger and his wife, Paulette, make their home in rural Erskine, Northwestern Minnesota. They have four children and four grandsons.

Phil BairdAnother highlight will be the recognition of Phil Baird (right), associate professor of natural resources, who recently received the 2004 Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions in Undergraduate Education.  Presented each year since 1965, the award represents the highest recognition by the University of Minnesota community of its most distinguished scholar-teachers.  Baird has been a faculty member at UMC since 1979.

At 2 p.m. the processional will begin, led by senior faculty member and mace-bearer David Hoff, assistant professor of agricultural economics.  The procession will include faculty marshal William Peterson, professor of mathematics, followed by the UMC faculty, degree candidates, and platform guests.

Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Detachment 610, with students from UMC, will serve as the color guard. 

University of Minnesota Regent Clyde Allen, Jr., will offer greetings from the Board of Regents, and Roger Moe will present the commencement address.  UMC Chancellor Velmer S. Burton, Jr., and Regent Allen will confer the degrees, while UMC Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs W. Daniel Svedarsky presents the candidates. 

Kyle RollnessCrookston Student Association (CSA) President Kyle Rollness (left), an agricultural business major from Langdon-Walhalla, North Dakota, will speak for the class of 2004.  As outgoing student body president, Rollness will pass the academic torch to CSA Vice President-elect Deann Roers, a business management major from West Fargo, North Dakota.

Korey Hegreberg, member of the UMC Class of 1998 and vice president of the UMC Alumni Association, will offer congratulations to the class of 2004 and will welcome them into the Alumni Association. 

Special music will be presented by the UMC Choir under the direction of George French, assistant professor of music and theater.

Following the ceremonies that afternoon, a special commissioning and bar pinning ceremony will be held in Kiehle Auditorium on campus.  The ceremony will recognize three graduates taking part in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC).  Officials from Detachment 610 will present commissions to Kevin McClure, Rickey Lott, and Adam Schubert, who will have earned the rank of second lieutenants in the United States Air Force.
