UMC Names Outstanding Alumni for 2003 The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Alumni Association is pleased to announce its Outstanding Alumni Awards for the year 2003. These awards recognize alumni who have displayed exemplary commitment and service to their occupational field, community, education, place of worship, and family. This year, the UMC Alumni Association has selected two alumni who have met the criteria in an outstanding manner. This year’s honorees are Steven Peterson ‘76 of Wadena, MN, and Douglas “Carl” Melbye ’77 of Crookston. The two were honored during ceremonies held at halftime of the homecoming football game on Saturday, September 27, on the UMC campus.
A 1977 graduate of UMC who majored in computer programming, Carl Melbye is the regional circulation supervisor for Liberty Publishing (the owner of the Crookston Daily Times) as well as circulation manager for the Crookston Daily Times. Carl wears many hats at work; he does monthly reports on the paper’s progress, works with 32 adult and youth carriers, and he is trained to sell advertising and help the pressman when things fall behind. For 28 years Carl has been a member of the Eagles 873, serving as president in 1985. He is a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion, and he served on the UMC Alumni Association Board (and is a past-president). Carl has been a member of UMC Teambackers for two years and has been that organization's director for the past year and a half. Carl served on the first committee for the UMC Alumni Parade and currently serves as a board member of the Crookston Youth Basketball Association. He and his wife, Maribeth, have two children, Jordan, 12 and Beau, 9. Steven Peterson attended UMC from 1974 to 1976 and majored in dairy science. He went on to attend North Dakota State University, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in animal science. Steven serves as a regional field representative for the Holstein Association headquartered in Battleboro, Vermont. He covers North and South Dakota and Minnesota. He promotes and sells programs and services for the association. As a tri-captain of this association, he supervises five field representatives in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas. Steven is a member of the Knights of Columbus, president of the parish council for St. Anne’s Church in Wadena, past president of the West Central Holstein Club, and a member of the Holstein Association . He serves as a 4-H Leader and Dairy Superintendent for the Wadena County Fair. Stephen and his wife, Nancy, have a seventeen year old daughter, Catherine, and they reside in Wadena.
