UMC Snow Daze:  A Week of Frosted Fun Feb. 23-28

Snow Daze - Frost Yourself

Snow Daze, the annual winter fun festival for students at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will run from February 23-28.  This year's theme is “Frost Yourself.”

The annual Student Success Fair is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, in Sahlstrom Conference Center Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The purpose of the Success Fair is to promote a variety of resources—academic, personal, social, financial—that are available to UMC students and that enhance student success.  Many campus organizations and support services will participate in the event.

Students will get a chance to play “Survival Bingo” on Monday, Feb.23, starting at 8 p.m. in Brown Dining Room.  Participants will vie for prizes that help them “survive college life.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, Student Activities will sponsor an “Open Mic” Night starting at 8 p.m. in the Eagles Nest Lounge in Sahlstrom Conference Center.  Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to sign up at Dowell Information Desk.  Prizes will be awarded to the top three performers

A Cupcake Demonstration, where, in keeping with the week’s theme, students can frost their own cupcakes, is set for Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. in the Eagles Nest Lounge.

The Great Conversations Series, produced by the U of M College of Continuing Education and broadcast to the Crookston Campus from the Twin Cities, will continue Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Dowell Hall 220.  The conversation, “The Loss of 9/11:  Two Perspectives,” will feature authors Pauline Boss and Gail Sheehy.

In commemoration of Black History Month, UMC’s Concerts and Lectures Committee will bring Mixed Blood Theatre’s play “Black Eagle” to campus that same evening, Feb. 25.  The performance will begin at 8 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium and is free and open to the public.  “Black Eagle” is a humor-laced story of African American scientist Ronald McNair, who was one of the astronauts aboard the ill-fated space shuttle Challenger.

The student-elected Snow Daze Royal Court will be officially introduced at Snow Daze Coronation beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday, February 26, in Kiehle Auditorium.  Snow Days Royalty will be crowned at the event.

The week will culminate with the annual Snow Daze Dinner and Dance on Saturday, February 28.  The Snow Daze Dinner will take place at the Northland Inn of Crookston at 7 pm. Cost is $10 per student.  The menu will include: choice of baked chicken or Mike's Famous BBQ pork ribs, baked potato, buttered corn, coleslaw, pasta salad, and salad bar.  Students must sign up in advance and by Feb. 25 at the Dowell Information Desk. The dance, featuring music by Club Dance Entertainment, will also take place at the Northland Inn from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.  Admission is free to UMC students and $4 for others.

UMC Snow Daze events are sponsored by UMC’s SPACE (Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment) Committee.  Disability accommodations can be made for any of the events by calling 218-281-8506.
