One-hundred and twenty-two students participated in commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 22, 1998. Of those, 105 were baccalaureate level degree candidates, and 17 were associate level candidates.

News Release

Commencement exercises for the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, on the campus mall (or in Lysaker Gymnasium in case of rain).

Baccalaureate, associate in applied science, and associate in science degrees will be conferred upon graduates, subject to completion of all curriculum requirements. The ceremonies include not only spring quarter graduates, but also those who plan to complete graduation requirements during the 1998 summer and fall quarters. Students graduating during the past fall and winter quarters may also participate in commencement ceremonies.

Featured speaker at this year’s rites will be the Honorable Robert Bergland, University of Minnesota Regent. Bergland is retired from both the private and public sector and lives near Roseau, MN, on the family farm where he was born and raised. A graduate of the University of Minnesota’s School of Agriculture, Bergland served as a member of the U.S. Congress (1970-77) and as Secretary of Agriculture under President Carter (1977-80). He was president of Farmland World Trade from 1981 to 1983 and general manager of the National Rural Electric Co-operative Association (NRECA) from 1983 to 1993. In his role in NRECA, he represented the rural electric co-operatives before committees of Congress and regulatory agencies. He was especially active in promoting rural community and economic development. He also served as a director on the Cooperative Finance Corporation and the Homestead Fund, a financial asset management group.

The Honorable Julie Bleyhl will bring greetings from the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.

UMC Chancellor Donald Sargeant and Bleyhl will confer the degrees, while UMC Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Douglas Knowlton will present the candidates.

UMC Student Forum President Mark Erickson, business management major from Fertile, will pass the Torch to President-elect Barbara Sabino, business management major from Crookston.

The processional will be led by mace-bearer Richard Christenson, associate professor of speech, and faculty marshal William Peterson, professor of mathematics.

President of the UMC Alumni Association, Jeff Bergsgaard (class of 1995), will offer congratulations to the graduates. The presentation of colors will be by the Grand Forks Air Force Base Color Guard, and special music will be presented by the UMC Choir under the direction of George French, assistant director of music and theater.

The public is welcome to attend the commencement exercises and the reception in Brown Dining Room following the ceremonies.
