Learning Revolution in Higher
Education
The Learning Revolution in Higher Education, a Public Broadcasting System Satellite Downlink, will be viewed at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) on Thursday, January 29, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., in Sahlstrom Conference Center AB. Refreshments will be provided.
The program will discuss the principles that can provide the foundation for creating a more learning-centered institution of higher education; showcase exemplary colleges that have begun the process of becoming learning colleges for the 21st century; and analyze the major challenges facing colleges and universities that plan to launch initiatives to place learning first.
Terry OBanion and Diana Oblinger, co-editors of The Learning Revolution: The Challenge of Information Technology in the Academy, will examine the colleges that are leading the way in the learning revolution.

Terry O'Banion Ph.D. is President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College, an international consortium of leading community colleges in the United States and Canada dedicated to experimentation and innovation. He is also the author of A Learning College for the 21st Century, published by The Oryx Press in Phoenix, AZ. The book, which is a publication of the American Association of Community Colleges and the American Council on Education, was published in May 1997 and is now in its third printing.
O'Banion has written 12 books, including Teaching and Learning in the Community College, Innovation in the Community College, and Teachers for Tomorrow: Staff Development in the Community/Junior College. He has also written more than 100 articles on the community college, and has consulted in more than 500 community colleges in the United States and Canada. In his work as the President and CEO of the League for Innovation, he has secured more than $45 million in grants to support innovative projects designed to improve and expand learning in community colleges.
He has served as dean of students at two Florida community colleges and as professor of community college education at the University of Illinois in Urbana. One of the leading spokespersons on the learning revolution, he is an active consultant with dozens of community colleges committed to institution-wide efforts to create more learning-centered institutions.
He holds a Ph.D. in administration in higher education from Florida State University and a master's degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Florida.
Diana G. Oblinger, Ph.D. is the Manager, Academic Programs and Strategy for IBM's Global Education Industry. She is an editor of The Learning Revolution: The Challenge of Information Technology in the Academy, which is published by Anker Publishing Company, Inc. in Bolton, MA. She is known for her leadership in teaching and learning, including advancing the concept of student mobile computing and distributed instruction in the United States, Mexico and Europe. She has consulted and spoken at numerous colleges and universities.
Prior to joining IBM, Dr. Oblinger was on the faculty at the University of Missouri and at Michigan State University. She was also an administrator at the University of Missouri. She has received three outstanding teaching awards, an outstanding research award, and was named Young Alumnus of the Year by Iowa State University. She holds three degrees from Iowa State University: a B.S. in Botany, an M.S. in Plant Breeding and a Ph.D. in Cytogenetics.
Dr. Oblinger has held several management positions within IBM, including academic consulting and solution development for instruction. More recently, she led the announcement team for IBM Global Campus. Simultaneously, she was responsible for IBM's collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. the Institute for Academic Technology.
In addition to The Learning Revolution, she is also editor of The Future of the Compatible Campus-Planning, Designing, and Implementing Information Technology In the Academy, as well as author of numerous papers on distributed instruction and on enhancing instruction with technology.
Oblinger has been a panelist on several programs for Dallas Teleconferences and for the STARLINKTM teleconference network.
THE MODERATORBob Ray Sanders is a professional communicator with major achievements in print journalism, in public broadcasting, and in higher education. Sanders is a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. In two decades in public broadcasting, he served as vice president of KERA-TV/Channel 13 in Dallas-Fort Worth and as host and producer of the station's award-winning program, "News Addition." He is also a distinguished lecturer at Texas Woman's University.
A 1969 graduate of the University of North Texas, he is past president of the Press Club of Fort Worth. He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Press Club of Dallas, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators. He currently serves on the advisory board of the AIDS Outreach Center in Fort Worth and the Advertising Review Committee of the State Bar of Texas.
Sanders has served as moderator for several Dallas Teleconferences, including "Dancing On The Edge of Chaos," "Coping With Changing Campus Culture," and "Anger In The Classroom."
