UMC NACTA Team Wins Sweepstakes Award

UMC's 1999 NACTA TeamOn April 25th, 1999, the University of Minnesota, Crookston NACTA team placed first in the annual National Judging Competition of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). UMC's team won both the four-year college division competition and the overall Sweepstakes competition between the top two- and four-year college teams. UMC has brought home the overall Sweepstakes trophy six times in the last ten years.

Thirty-five UMC students participated in the ten contests making up the competition: Agricultural Computers, Agricultural Management, Animal Science, Crops, Dairy, Horse, Horticulture, Livestock, Quiz Bowl, and Soils. Dave Hoff was the NACTA Coordinator, Alicia Wiebe served as NACTA Student Chairperson, Bonnie Haehnel served as Treasurer, and several faculty, staff and students coached the teams.

UMC students prepare for the Spring competitions throughout the year, starting as early as September. They spend many hours in study and fundraising in addition to their regular class workloads. Why do they do it? The NACTA contest is a great opportunity for students to gain more professional experience in their majors as well as new areas. It is also an exciting way to expand horizons!

NACTA competitions have been held since 1957 and involve knowledge and skills contests covering various agricultural topics. The competition is tough, including college and university students from all across the nation. The event is held in different areas of the country each year to give students an opportunity to travel to areas they may otherwise never visit and agricultural colleges the responsibility of hosting the competition.

Almost 600 students from 34 schools across the United States competed in the 1999 Judging Conference at Cloud Community College in Concordia, Kansas. UMC will host the next competition at Crookston on April 28-30, 2000. Students and faculty are already making preparations for next year.
