Artificial Insemination Course at UMC in March

The course, Artificial Insemination of Cattle, will be held at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) on Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in the University Teaching and Outreach Center, Room 30.

There will be an additional two-day trip in late April or early May to complete the practical training. The classroom portion will cover anatomy and physiology, heat detection, hormone function and synchronization, semen storage and handling, proper Artificial Insemination technique, record keeping and sire selection.

The practical portion or the course will allow students to develop the technical skills necessary to implement a successful Artificial Insemination program on their farm or ranch.

Instructor for the course is Lyle Westrom, UMC associate professor of dairy.

The cost of the one-credit course is $90 plus approximately $100 for the two-day trip. Students will receive an Artificial Insemination Certificate upon successful completion of the course. This certificate entitles students to a refresher course at no charge when the course is offered again.

Disability accommodations will be provided upon request. For more information or to register, call UMC’s Office of Outreach and Continuing Education at 218-281-8681.
