UMC Commencement Set for May
21 Commencement exercises for the University of
Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, on the campus mall In
case of rain, the event will be held in Lysaker Gymnasium.
Baccalaureate, associate in applied science, and associate
in science degrees will be conferred upon graduates, subject to completion of all
curriculum requirements.
At 2:00 p.m., the processional will enter the campus mall led by the Mace-Bearer
Richard Christenson, associate professor of Speech. The procession includes Faculty
Marshal Robert Smith, associate professor and Business Management Center Director; the
faculty; candidates for degrees and platform guests.
UMC Chancellor Donald Sargeant and U
of M Regent Patricia Spence will confer the degrees, while UMC Vice Chancellor for
Academic Affairs Douglas Knowlton will present the candidates. The Honorable Spence will
also bring greetings from the Board of Regents and will address the graduates.
Spence is vice chair of the Board of Regents. She is
a homemaker and former mayor of Little Falls. She earned a bachelor of science degree in
home economics from the University of Minnesota. She has taught school, co-directed a U.S.
Department of Education project for rural youth, owned and managed a retail business, and
served as Morrison County economic development director. She was elected to three terms as
mayor and has provided leadership to many educational and governmental boards, including
the Minnesota Supreme Court Board of Continuing Legal Education, the Minnesota Higher
Education Coordinating Board, and the Central Minnesota Initiative Fund.
UMC Student Forum President Barb Sabino, business
management major from Queens, NY, will pass the Torch to President-elect Shon Naslund,
agricultural industries sales and management major from Lake Park.
President of the UMC Alumni Association, Twylla (Johnson) Altepeter class of 1968, will
offer congratulations to the graduates. The presentation of colors will be by the Grand
Forks Air Force Base Color Guard, and special music will be presented by the UMC Choir
under the direction of George French, assistant director of music and theather.
The public is welcome to attend the commencement exercises and the reception in Brown
Dining Room following the ceremonies.
