MATHCOUNTS Set for UMC Feb. 25

Seventh and eighth grade students from northwestern Minnesota will participate in this year’s MATHCOUNTS on Friday, February 25, at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC).

Students from the following towns will participate: Bagley, Bemidji, Blackduck, Crookston, Fisher, Greenbush/Middle River, Hallock, Karlstad, Kelliher, and Twin Valley.

MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide math program, is both a coaching program and a series of competitions at regional, state and national levels. Area students who made their school math team will compete against "mathletes" from other schools at UMC. The Crookston winners will advance to state competition in March.

The program in northwestern Minnesota is sponsored by the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), the Lake Agassiz Chapter of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers, several local industries, consulting engineering firms and private individuals.

National sponsors estimate participation at 8 million students nationwide. The winning teams from each state will receive trips to Washington, D.C., for the national finals in May.

Coordinators for this years MATHCOUNTS are William Peterson, professor of mathematics at UMC and Greg Gilbertson, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Bemidji.

"By sponsoring the MATHCOUNTS program, the engineers hope to address the importance of developing good skills among pre-college students," said Peterson. Disability accommodations will be provided upon request. Please call 281-8261.
