The singing group Peaceful Women will perform at UMC on October 23, 1999, at 7:00 p.m. in Bede Ballroom. The performance is free to UMC students, faculty, and staff. A $3.00 cover charge will be asked of non-UMC attendees. Peaceful Women are an a cappella group based in Northern Wisconsin that expresses a strong commitment to women's issues, social justice, freedom, and the environment. The group was founded by four women from Wisconsin's Bayfield Peninsula out of a need to fill a silence they felt was created by the lack of women's voices raised in song. They chose not to accompany themselves with instruments, believing that the natural beauty of the voice should be showcased. As well as perform at music festivals, environmental rallies and social justice events, they also present workshops, focusing on chants, rounds, and the healing power of music. Much of their music is written by members Madeline Hart and Liz Woodworth. Along with singing professionally, the group is also immersed in other artistic areas. Marcie Gephart teaches high school vocal music, Liz Woodworth teaches language arts and drama, Gwen Baxter is a professional painter and Madeline Hart is a weaver and visual artist. They acknowledge the need for artistic creativity in everyone's life and encourage us to explore the artist in ourselves. Peaceful Women are a fixture at Lake Superior Big Top Chatauqua, and they have opened for such luminaries as Rory Block, Greg Brown, and Patty Larkin, as well as performing their own concerts. They have released to compact discs. http://www.borealis.net/peacefulwomen/ The performance is sponsored by UMC Concerts and Lectures with a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
