UMC Clubs to Promote National Youth Service Day at IMPACT Youth Center April 15

Several UMC clubs and student organizations will promote National Youth Service Day, Saturday, April 15, by coordinating games and activities at the IMPACT Youth Center, East 3rd Street, behind the junior high school in Crookston.  Everyone in the Crookston community is invited to take part in the activities, which will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.  At 5 p.m. the center will serve hot dogs and sloppy joes for only 25 cents each.

The event is sponsored by AmeriCorps.  AmeriCorps volunteer Nikki Fiorini says, “We are very excited to be celebrating National Youth Service Day at the IMPACT Youth Center in Crookston.  The students at UMC are really looking forward to the activities planned for the celebration.  This is also Volunteer Appreciation Week, and it’s a wonderful way to celebrate, share, and reflect on their time spent volunteering throughout the school year.  We hope to see many family members from the community.”

UMC clubs participating in the event include the Horticulture Club, Cooperative Campus Ministry, the Multicultural Club, the Drama Club, and members of the S.P.A.C.E. (Student Programming and Activities for Campus Entertainment) Committee.

The IMPACT Youth Center opened nearly a year ago.  It is staffed by IMPACT AmeriCorps and is supported by the Crookston School District 593.  The center is supervised at all times by IMPACT AmeriCorps Volunteers with help from other volunteers throughout the community.  The center is open Tuesdays 3:15-9 p.m., Thursdays 6:30-9 p.m., and Saturdays 12 Noon-10 p.m. until the end of the school year.  Plans are being made to open the center every day during the summer through July.  The center is free and open to youth ages 7 to 20 years old.

Community members who would like to volunteer at the IMPACT Youth Center should contact Liz Valdez at 281-8525.
