UMC Ag Activities Day Set for December 3, 1999

Ag Activities Day, sponsored by the Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC), is scheduled for Friday, December 3.

High-school students and members of 4-H clubs and FFA chapters from Minnesota and North Dakota are invited to compete in the following contests:  consumer products, crops, dairy judging, general livestock, horses, agricultural mechanics, dairy products, farm management, wildlife, forestry, floriculture, landscaping/nursery, meats, soils, and ag salesmanship. Morning activities will include contest tours and special workshops on Small Animals, A.I. Reproductive Techniques, Diversity of Insects, and Audubon in Your Backyard.  UMC’s Collegiate FFA chapter will also sponsor a Knowledge Bowl contest before the awards recognition ceremony.

Contest winners will be announced in Lysaker Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. UMC Ag Activity Day Scholarships of $750 will be awarded for high individual performance, $600 for second high individual, and $450 for third high individual in each contest.  The top three teams will also be recognized.  Each team score will be tabulated from the top three individuals from each participating school or chapter.

Last year nearly 1,000 students from Minnesota and North Dakota schools participated in the annual event, according to Jane Sims, assistant to the director, Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources, and coordinator of Ag Activities Day.  In addition to area schools, registrations for this year's Ag Activities Day have already been received from as far away as the Twin Cities.

Registration fees are $1.50 per student if received by November 24. Registration fees after that date are $2.00.  Disability accommodations will be provided upon request.  Interested persons should call UMC’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Center office at 218-281-8101 or visit the website: www.umcrookston.edu/ag/aad
