Annual Awards Reception Recognizes Students, Faculty, Staff

The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) recently presented students with achievement and sevice awards at the annual Student Awards Reception held in Bede Ballroom on the UMC campus.  The ceremony is held each year to honor those who have made outstanding service contributions or who have achieved high academic standing at the University’s Crookston campus.

Among the recognitions and honors, student organization presidents and members of the Crookston Student Association were recognized for their work during the year. Students who earned at 3.5 GPA or higher were also recognized for their academic achievements.

Fourteen students received Student Service Awards, which UMC presents to recognize those students who have excelled not only academically, but also through leadership and service to the University and local community.  Those students are (back row) Myron Weltikol, Crookston; Sophonie “Sonic” Petithomme, Miami, Florida; Jim Myers, Woodbury; Lucas Clow, Barrett; Shane Roers, Fargo, North Dakota;  Carver Olson, Salol; (middle row)  Rebekah Stortroen, Climax; Lisa Detloff, Bertha; Luciana Forati, Argentina; Holly Wildman, Villard; Kelli Rusch, Hutchinson; Barb Heinze, Belgrade; (front row) Kathleen Bade, Rudolph, Wisconsin; John Rozek, St. Paul.

From that group, two students were recognized with the year’s top academic and student service award:  “Man and Woman of the Year.”  The UMC Man and Woman of the Year for 2000 are John Rozek, a business management major from St. Paul, and Kathleen Bade, an early childhood education major from Rudolph, Wisconsin.  Rozek is the first UMC student to be named Man of the Year for a second consecutive year.

Students also honored selected faculty and staff members with special awards.  These awards are significant in that they are selected by the entire UMC student body.  Five awards were presented in four categories.  Best Implementer of Technology:  Peg Sherven, Senior User Service Specialist, UMC Computer Help Desk.  Outstanding Educator:  Steve Shirley, Instructor of Marketing.  Most Supportive of Students:  Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, Director of Student Activities and Service Learning.  Outstanding Service to Students:  Jerry Knutson, Associate Professor of Biology, and Robbie McGurran, Instructor of Information Networking Management.
