UMC Teambackers Golf Classic Slated for July 15

The tenth annual University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Teambackers Golf Classic will be held Saturday, July 15, at Minakwa Golf Club in Crookston.  Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m., and tournament orientation will start at 10:45 a.m.  The actual tournament will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.  Proceeds from the event help support the UMC Scholarship Fund.

This year all entrants will receive a shirt to signify their participation, and a hole-in-one contest will provide a chance to win a new car, according to Curt Almlie, Director of Institutional Relations at UMC.

The UMC Teambackers Golf Classic is open to the public, but only the first 90 golfers who pay their registration fees are eligible to play.  The registration fee is $65 per golfer.  Included in the fee are green fees, commemorative shirt, prizes, old-fashioned picnic, and contribution to the UMC Scholarship Fund.  Golf cart fees are not included.  Registration fees must be paid by July 11, 2000.

The tournament will utilize a “Texas Scramble” format with five golfers on each team.  Both men and women are invited to participate.  Golfers may set up their own teams, but they must use the following criteria:

1.  The five-member team handicap must equal 80 or more for 18 holes.

2.  Not more than two members of the team can have 18-hole handicaps of 10 or less.

Individuals who are not part of a preestablished team but wish to play in the tournament will be assigned to teams made up by the Golf Classic Committee.  If entrants do not have a handicap, one will be established for them.

A social and picnic will follow the tournament, and awards will be presented to the winning team, longest drive, closest to the pin, and longest putt.  Spouses of registered golfers are invited to the social and picnic, but they should RSVP to the UMC Alumni Center by July 11.
