Two Outstanding UMC Alumni Honored by University

Two outstanding University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) alumni were honored as the 1999 Outstanding Alumni during UMC’s Homecoming. Alumni receiving the Outstanding Alumni Awards were: David Legare ’89 of Crookston MN and Wendy Krueger ’83 of St. James MN.

David Legare is a 1989 graduate of UMC’s agricultural aviation program. From there, he went on to the University of Minnesota to obtain a bachelor of science degree in agriculture with an emphasis in agronomy as well as his master’s degree in plant breeding.

He is currently a scientist for the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics. As a scientist, he designs, implements, maintains, analyzes and reports on canola research in Minnesota for small plots with the University in addition to field-scale plots with the Minnesota Canola Council and Canola Council of Canada since 1998. He presents results from the research conducted in the form of Varietal Trial Bulletin, Canola Production Centre Annual Report and at winter farmer meetings and summer field days.

Legare has been active in the Catholic church is a member of the American Society of Agronomy.

Wendy Krueger is a 1983 graduate from UMC’s natural resource conservation program. From UMC, she went on to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to receive her bachelor’s degree in wildlife/biology. She later attained her master’s degree in wildlife management from West Virginia University.

Krueger is currently a Wildlife Damage Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. She has also been employed as a wildlife research biologist and wildlife research technician for the Minnesota DNR as well as a biological technician for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Bethel Alaska. She is an active member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation planning committee for the first ever "Women in the Outdoors" event that took place in April 1999. Krueger serves as the Minnesota Chapter Region 4 representative for The Wildlife Society.

She is a volunteer coach for girl’s basketball and softball and has participated in the Habitat for Humanity bike ride. She has been recognized for the National Dean’s List, Safari Club and Michigan Bowhunters Appreciation.
