The B.S. degree in elementary education is a career-oriented program that prepares students to be effective teachers of children from Kindergarten through grade six. Graduates of this teacher education program design, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children in elementary education classrooms. They are prepared to work collaboratively with families and in the community.

  • Hands-on experiences - The Elementary Education program requires numerous experiences in actual elementary classrooms in the local schools. Students implement assignments in which they interact, observe, tutor and teach children as part of their courses. Students complete two student teaching placements during their senior year.
  • Full-time faculty instructors and advisors - University of Minnesota, Crookston's (UMC) Elementary Education students are taught, advised and mentored by full-time Education faculty.
  • Students are taught to use a variety of research-based instructional strategies as well as multiple performance-based assessment practices.
  • All students must complete a Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) which is a nationally recognized assessment of readiness to teach.
  • Teachers trained at UMC are leaders who make a tremendous professional and civic impact in their local communities.
  • Understand and apply educational principles to the development of a young child.
  • Have the knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective teaching.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts of language arts, reading, and literature, mathematics, social studies, science, physical education and health, and visual and performing arts.
  • Our program prepares you to succeed in the classroom and impact your students.
  • This program provides students with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to be effective, highly qualified teachers.

Rupprecht and Charli Schocker at Hobbiton

In high school, she and a friend declared a goal to study abroad in college. This spring (2017), Malena Rupprecht, an Elementary Education major from Thief River Falls, Minn., achieved that goal with a trip to Australia and New Zealand. “It is interesting how you can learn all about a place before you go, but when you are really there, it is different and unexpected,” she says. Learn more.

Trina Weisel

Dipping her canoe paddle into the tranquility of the Boundary Waters is one of the purest forms of happiness known to University of Minnesota Crookston Senior Trina Weisel. The elementary education major from Alexandria, Minn., spent the last six summers at the Northern Lakes Canoe Base, first as a camper and later as a guide taking Girl Scouts ages 12-18 on trips through the pristine wilderness of northern Minnesota. Alyssa SchneiderSenior Alyssa Schneider, a formerly a Health Science major and now an Elementray Education major at the University of Minnesota Crookston talks about her experience in "Asking the Right Questions"PDF File Icon  from the Spring 2014 version of the Torch magazine. She saya, “I love science, I love math, and I love children, and I wanted a major that had the potential for me to combine all three. That’s when I decided I needed to consider teaching.”

More than 95% of U of M Crookston teacher education graduates gain full-time employment in their field or enroll in graduate or professional school within one year of graduation. That’s a fact. We’ll sure miss you when you graduate, but we know as a proud Golden Eagle alum, you’ll want to come back to cheer us on at homecoming or catch up with your favorite professors.

Student Teaching. They’re a great way to gain real-world experiences, and receive valuable experience teaching and working with children/students in classroom settings of diverse school districts and early childhood education programs.

Opportunities for undergraduate research also add real value to your educational experience by allowing you to design and conduct research while working alongside faculty mentors. Research experience is especially helpful if you plan to attend graduate school.
