Databases - Education

Educator's Reference Complete provides access to over 760 top educational publications, including more than 600 of the titles in full text. The coverage spans the literature on primary, secondary and higher education as well as special education, home schooling and adult education.

ERIC - This database is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to education-related literature. ERIC provides coverage of journal articles, conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories.

Literature Criticism Online  - This is a searchable compilation of literary commentary publications from the following Gale print publications. For Early Childhood student the most useful is Children's Literature Review but Poetry Criticism, Short Story Criticism, Drama Criticism and Children's Literature Review may all be of use. The collection provides indexing and access to tens of thousands of essays.

Professional Collection - A custom selection of more than 300 full text journals for educators that is updated daily and provides 24-hour  access from school or home. It offers balanced coverage for any professional educator in the following areas: arts and humanities; child  and adolescent psychology and development; drug and alcohol abuse; health/nutrition/fitness; learning disabilities; literature; school law; science and technology; social sciences; and sports/athletic training.

Professional Development Collection provides a focused collection of electronic information especially for professional educators, professional librarians and education researchers. Professional Development Collection includes full text for Chronicle of Higher  Education, Educational Leadership, Journal of Education, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Theory Into Practice, and nearly 520 high quality education journals.

Teachers Reference Center - This index of over 260 titles from the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals, and books is offered free via the EBSCOhost platform. This database provides coverage on key education topics such as Assessment,  Continuing Education, Current Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Development, Instructional Media, Language Arts, Literacy Standards,   Science & Mathematics, and more.

Databases - General

In addition to the specialized databases listed above there are several very large databases which would be useful to your research:

    • Academic Search Premier - contains indexing for nearly 15,300 publications, with full text for more than 6,100 of those titles. PDF back files to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable references are provided for more than 1,000 titles.
    • Ebsco MegaFile - EBSCO MegaFILE is a multi-disciplinary database providing full text for nearly 19,900 total publications and indexing & abstracting for more than 25,000 publications.
    • Google Scholar - A Google search engine which indexes peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts, and other scholarly literature from a variety of academic publishers and professional societies, as well as scholarly articles available across the web. UMC Library has enabled linking to the full text of articles located in Google Scholar using FindIt the UMC Library Linking service.

Journal collections - Search as database

Periodicals - goes to the list of the UMC Library's major periodicals collections. It has a link to our list of UMC Print Periodicals and to the Find a Full Text Electronic Journal page to search for online access to a specific periodical title. Search by journal title, broad subject category, or ISSN.

Science Direct- Scientific, technical, and medical information from 1995 to the present. The print publisher is Elsevier®. The journals in the collection are listed with an icon indicating the journals to which UMC has access.

SpringerLink acquired Kluwer Online and combined the journal collections of both publishers to provide access to some of the world's leading scientific, technical, and medical journals.

Wiley Interscience- Scientific, technical, medical, and professional journals, plus major reference works. The journals in the collection can be browsed.


The UMC Library Catalog searches for physical books in the UMC Library. Once there, you can switch the view to include items at all the libraries at the University of Minnesota, in case you would like to use our GetIt service, or you can use the "Articles and More" view, which allows you to search our electronic resources at the article level.

Online Books

Ebook Central - is an e-book collection with more than 150,000 titles from a wide variety of publishers including many University Press titles, and titles from Wiley, Kaplan, Kluwer, Random House, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and McGraw-Hill.  It has an easy-to-use interface with simple searching and tools including personal bookshelves, automatic citations, highlighting and annotating. 

eBook Collection (EBSCOhost): This collection contains a large number of titles from leading publishers. eBook Academic Subscription Collection (TM) supplies full-text ebooks covering a broad spectrum of academic subjects from business to science and engineering to the humanities.
