UMC subscribed ebook collections

The UMC Library subscribes to large eBook collections eBook Collection (EBSCOhost) and Ebook Central, each of which contain around 150,000 titles. These subscribed collections can be read online using a web browser and can also be downloaded for offline reading.

UMC students, staff, and faculty also have access to many ebooks through shared subscriptions with the other University of Minnesota libraries. These include ebooks from major publishers: Wiley Online Library, Science Direct, Brill E-Books among others. These ebooks are generally collections of essays or papers on a topic with each essay being a separate pdf formatted document. These documents can be read online using a reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader or saved to your computer for later reading.

All Minnesotans have access to an ebook collection called Ebooks Minnesota, which covers a wide variety of subjects for readers of all ages, and features content from our state's independent publishers, including some of our best literature and nonfiction.

Reading eBooks online

You can read ebooks online using a standard web browser on your computer or a mobile device. On the larger screens this works well. These ebooks have many features that enhance the reading experience. Many of the books from our collections are searchable within the Library Catalog and can also be found in the UMC Library Database page eBook Collection (EBSCOhost) and Ebook Central.

It is also possible to download ebooks for offline reading. Because of the restrictions of copyright and licensing, there are some authorization requirements that must be done (just once) before you are able download to use books offline from our two largest eBook collections eBook Collection (EBSCOhost): and Ebook Central.

Downloading eBooks for offline use - Authorizing

You can download ebooks for offline use in two of our largest ebook collections eBook Collection (EBSCOhost): and Ebook Central. Both vendors require that you install Adobe Digital Editions to view and store the books offline.

To install Digital Editions follow the instructions on the Adobe Digital Editions website.

Authorizing Adobe Digital Editions After installation of Digital Editions, the Setup Assistant wizard prompts you to activate Adobe Digital Editions (you must be online during this process). During activation, you have the option to authorize your computer with an Adobe ID. If you don't have an Adobe ID, creating one is free and only takes a minute.
