Public invited to open house at Deep Winter Greenhouse 2.0
The Northwest Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnership and Bemidji Community Food Shelf will host a public open house as the Deep Winter Greenhouse Prototype 2.0 finishes construction.
The open house will be held on Saturday, September 30, from 1-4 p.m. at the Bemidji Community Food Shelf Farm, 1260 Exchange Avenue SE, Bemidji, MN 56601. The event includes Deep Winter Greenhouse presentations (1 p.m.), a ribbon cutting and tour (1:30 p.m.), and self-guided tours and a question-and-answer period (2 p.m.). The event is free to the public. RSVPs are requested at z.umn.edu/DWG_RSVP. “Deep Winter Greenhouses represent a future of local foods that will come from innovations to expand markets and the production season,” said Greg Schweser, Director of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems for the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP).
The open house is part of a statewide Deep Winter Greenhouse project led by the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDP). RSDP is working with five producers and community groups across Minnesota to field test a prototype design of a passive solar greenhouse that enables farmers to produce crops throughout the winter. The prototype was designed in collaboration with the University of Minnesota College of Design Center for Sustainable Building Research.
